Research Notes on Vaccine for Urinary Tract Infections
Researchers at the University of Michigan have reported positive results in the development of a vaccine for urinary tract infections (UTIs). The clinical study is currently being performed on mice, and the vaccine does appear to prevent infection and produced key types of immunity.1 Researchers are hoping the vaccine will go to phase 1 clinical trial in humans and be available to the market in two to three years.2

- The study appeared in the September 18, 2009 issue of the journal PLoS Pathogens.3
- Escherichia coli is the most common bacteria which causes UTIs.3
- It is estimated that 53% of women and 14% of men will be diagnosed with a UTI at least once in a lifetime.3
- UTIs are responsible for 1.3 million emergency room visits and 245,000 hospitalizations yearly.2
