Research Notes on Uterus


The word uterus is derived from the Latin term "womb." The uterus is the major female reproductive organ and it's main function is to nurture and protect the fertilized ovum - which will become the fetus until delivery. It is a pear shaped muscular organ comprised of the fundus, corpus, cervix and interal os (internal orifice of the uterus). The layers of the uterus include the endometrium, myometrium, perimetrium and peritoneum. The endometrium is the lining responsible for a females menstruation.1
