Research Notes on Urology

Urology is the branch of medical science that deals with the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the kidneys, bladder, ureters, urethra, and male reproductive organs. Although the female urinary tract is also covered under urology, the female genitalia and childbearing organs is not under the extent of the urologist's specialty. The following websites contain information that help describe and explain the field of urology and its subspecialties.

Fast Facts:

  • Urologists are doctors who evaluate and treat both men and women.
  • Following an examination, a urologist may order further tests such as an ultrasound, x-rays, CT, or IVP. A cystoscopy may be performed to look into the bladder with a camera called a cystoscope.
  • According to the American Cancer Society, all men over the age of 50 should have an annual digital rectal exam and PSA test to screen for prostate cancer. Those who have risk factors or a strong family history should have screening beginning at age 40.
