Urinary retention is defined as poor, intermittant urination, a sense of urgency and incomplete voiding. Urinary retention is also known as ischuria and is common in benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH). Urinary retention is a medical emergency, as the bladder can become enlarged and possibly tear.1
