Research Notes on Urinary Incontinence Medications
Medications are often used with other forms of therapy to treat urinary incontinence. The medication that is prescribed depends on the type of incontinence you have. For stress incontinence, an antidepressant may be prescribed.1 If you have urge incontinence, your doctor may prescribe an anticholinergic drug to calm your overactive bladder.2
Fast Facts:
- Antibiotics are used if the urinary incontinence is caused by an urinary tract infection.2
- For women, estrogen may be prescribed to strengthen the contractions of the bladder muscles.1
- Possible side effects of using medications for urinary incontinence include dry mouth, impotence, and constipation.1
