Research Notes on Uric Acid
Uric acid (or urate) is an organic compound that is composed of carbon, nitrogen, oxygen and hydrogen.1 It is the product of purine catabolism in humans. Uric acid concentration in human blood is between 3.6 mg/dL (~214µmol/L) and 8.3 mg/dL (~494µmol/L).2
Fast Facts:
- Accumulated uric acid in the joints is a cause for gout.2
- Uric acid crystal accumulation may lead to the formation of kidney stones.3
- Obesity, excessive alcohol use, and high purine diet can elevate uric acid levels in the blood.4
