Research Notes on Urethral Tubes or Sleeves
A urethral tube or sleeve, also called urethral insert, is a tampon-like, single-use device for managing urinary incontinence in women. Since the measurement of the urethra varies from woman to woman, the device is doctor-prescribed. One type of urethral insert has a balloon at the tip, that when inflated, presses against the urethra to block the urine. Another is a silicone tube that conforms to the shape of the urethra, hence, creating a seal to prevent leakage when inserted. Most women report discomfort and irritation while wearing the device; there is also the possibility of developing urinary tract infection (UTI). Nevertheless, the device is highly effective in controlling incontinence. Urethral inserts should not be used round-the-clock; it is intended for use only in special situations, such as social gatherings or sports activities.
