The urethra is part of the urinary system and is responsible for excretory function.1 It is the tube that connects the urinary bladder to the outside of the body.2 On average, adults pass a quart and a half of urine each day.3

Fast Facts:

  • Female's urethra: approximately 1.5-2 inches (3-5 cm) long; located between vulva and clitoris.2
  • Males' urethra: approximately 8 inches (15 cm) long; opens at the end of the penis.2
  • Women are more susceptible to bacterial infections urinary tract infection (UTI) than men.1
