Research Notes on Upper Gastrointestinal Series
Upper gastrointestinal series is a radiology test of the upper gastrointestinal tract. The test uses barium contrast material, fluoroscopy, and x-ray. Before the test, you drink a mix of barium and water. As the barium moves through your esophagus, stomach, and the first part of the small intestine, your doctor watches for narrow spots (strictures) in the upper intestinal tract, ulcers, tumors, polyps, or pyloric stenosis, hiatal hernias, scarring, blockages, and abnormalities of the muscular wall of the gastrointestinal tissues.
