Research Notes on Uncombable Hair Syndrome
Uncombable hair syndrome is a genetic condition affecting the structure of the hair follicle, resulting in disorderly hair that stands out from the scalp and cannot be combed flat.1 The hair is dry and brittle, generally silvery blond or straw colored, and the condition is generally apparent between three months and 12 years old.2 It was recognized as a real condition in the 1970s.
Fast Facts:
- Less than 100 cases in medical journals since 1973.3
- To be noticeable, 50% of the hairs must be affected by the structural abnormality.2
- One of a group of genetic disorders known as ectodermal dysplasia that affect the skin, hair, teeth and nails.4
- Also called pili trianguli et canaliculi, spun glass hair, or, in French, 'le syndrome des cheveux incoiffables.'
