Research Notes on Ultracet Abuse
Ultracet abuse in the United States is becoming a potential problem. Ultracet is not a controlled substance in the U.S. because studies showed a very low potential of abuse. Many people feel that Ultracet should be reclassified as a controlled substance. Signs of addiction to Ultracet may be hard for a person to recognize. Symptoms may be inadequate pain control, mental illness, "doctor shopping" (seeing many health care providers), going through a prescription too quickly, reports of losing a prescription, reports of stolen prescription, and reporting allergies to other pain medication.1 Ultracet may cause withdrawal symptoms if the medication is taken for a long period of time or at high doses. Withdrawal symptoms may include anxiety, sweating, trouble sleeping, and shaking.2
Fast Facts:
- Ultracet is normally prescribed when the pain is likely to improve quickly.3
- Ultracet is used for short-term use (five days or less) for the acute management of pain.4
- Ultracet should not be used if a person is intoxicated, recently used narcotic pain medicine, used a sedative or tranquilizer, used medicine for depression or mental illness, or any type of street drug.5
- The risk of Ultracet abuse is increased if a person has abused drugs or alcohol in the past.2
- Ultracet is a brand name for the combination of drugs tramadol hydrochloride and acetaminophen.
