Research Notes on Ulcerative Colitis vs. Crohn's Disease

Both ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are types of inflammatory bowel disease, and the symptoms are often so closely related that it makes a diagnosis difficult. The location of the inflammation within the digestive tract is often a clue to which condition a patient is suffering from. Crohn's disease may appear anywhere in the digestive tract, while ulcerative colitis is usually only found in the large intestine.1

Fast Facts:

  • Both Crohn's and ulcerative colitis patients suffer from abdominal pain; however, Crohn's patients typically experience pain in the lower right quadrant, while colitis patients feel more pain in the lower left quadrant.1
  • While a Crohn's patient may develop fever during flare-ups, a frequent fever is more common in ulcerative colitis.2
  • During a colonoscopy or sigmoidoscopy, physicians often find ulceration in the lining of the large intestine of ulcerative colitis patients, while Crohn's patients develop deeper ulcerations that may extend into all the layers of the bowel wall.1
