Both ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease are types of inflammatory bowel disease, and the symptoms are often so closely related that it makes a diagnosis difficult. The location of the inflammation within the digestive tract is often a clue to which condition a patient is suffering from. Crohn's disease may appear anywhere in the digestive tract, while ulcerative colitis is usually only found in the large intestine.¹
