Research Notes on Ulcerative Colitis and Pregnancy
According to researchers, women who have ulcerative colitis during pregnancy are still able to have a normal delivery.1 Although there are many medications used to treat ulcerative colitis, some are considered safer than others during pregnancy. For example, sulfasalazine is considered to be relatively safe for use by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.2

- Ulcerative colitis flare-ups are more likely in the first trimester of pregnancy and right after delivery.1
- Common symptoms of ulcerative colitis are diarrhea, weight loss, fatigue, nausea, and abdominal pain.3
- Ulcerative colitis usually affects adults between the ages of twenty and forty years old.3
