Research Notes on Ulcerative Colitis Symptoms
A flare-up of ulcerative colitis (UC) symptoms often happens suddenly and can last days, weeks, or even months. Symptoms can include abdominal pain and cramping, frequent bowel movements that may contain blood or mucus, and "false urgency” (feeling that you have to go to the bathroom when you really don’t). These flare-ups of symptoms can recur at any time.1
Fast Facts:
- Considered a form of inflammatory bowel disease, UC is an inflammation of the large intestine or colon which is characterized by the formation of ulcers (or sores).2
- The severity of the symptoms depends on the extent of the disease and the amount of inflammation present.3
- Rectal pain can be a symptom of ulcerative proctitis, a form of UC.4
- Fulminant colitis, although rare, is life threatening. Symptoms include severe pain, profound diarrhea, dehydration, and shock.4
