Research Notes on Ulcerative Colitis

Ulcerative colitis is part of a group of diseases known as inflammatory bowel disease. Ulcerative colitis causes ulcers to form in the lining of the rectum and colon.1 The chronic inflammation of the digestive tract caused by ulcerative colitis is characterized by abdominal pain and diarrhea.2 While there is no known cure for ulcerative colitis, therapies exist that may dramatically reduce the signs and symptoms and even bring about long-term remission.2

Fast Facts:

  • Ulcerative colitis can occur at any age, but it usually starts between the ages of 15 and 30, and less frequently between 50 and 70 years of age.3
  • About half of those with ulcerative colitis have mild symptoms.3
  • Support groups and counseling may be important for coping with the emotional toll of ulcerative colitis.4
