Research Notes on U.S. Declares Public Health Emergency Over Swine Flu


On March 26, 2009, a state of emergency was declared in the United States due to an outbreak of the swine flu. Currently the swine flu has infected at least 20 people throughout the United States, and is blamed for nearly 81 deaths in New Mexico.1 The United States hopes this precautionary step will allow both the federal and state governments easier access to flu medications and testing.2

Fast Facts:

  • There have been nearly 12 million doses of Tamiflu released from the federal stockpile, which will be used in states affected.2
  • Since the outbreak there have been 1,384 reported cases in New Mexico, six in Canada, seven in California, two in Texas, two in Kansas, one in Ohio, and eight in New York.3
  • Schools in the affected areas are also taking precautionary measures by closing to help reduce the spread of the swine flu.3
