Research Notes on Tysabri Warnings and Precautions
Patients using Tysabri should be aware of an increased risk of developing progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy, a serious viral infection of the brain. Changes in mental state, difficulty talking or walking, or decreased vision should be reported to a physician immediately. Nausea, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, itching, clay-colored stools, and a yellowing of the skin or eyes also require medical attention. Patients must undergo testing every three to six months while using Tysabri.1
Fast Facts:
- Patients should inform their physician if they suffer from HIV or AIDS, herpes, shingles, leukemia, or lymphoma before using Tysabri.2
- If you have had an organ transplant, or are currently being treated with chemotherapy, radiation, or any steroid medications, you may need a lowered dosage of Tysabri.2
- Pregnant women may be advised to avoid Tysabri treatment during the pregnancy.2
- Tysabri is a brand name of the generic medication natalizumab. It is sometimes recommended in the treatment of multiple sclerosis or moderate to severe Crohn's disease.2
