Insect bites and stings occur as defense mechanism or when the insect seeks to feed. Certain substances, such as formic acid, coming from biting or stinging insects can cause immediate skin reactions resulting in redness and swelling of the injured area. Insect bites or stings can be classified according to the discomfort they cause or to the type of biting insect.
