Research Notes on Types of Incontinence
There are seven types of urinary incontinence. Of the seven, stress, urge, and mixed incontinence make up over 90% of all cases of incontinence.1 Stress incontinence is an involuntary leakage of urine that is the result of sudden pressure to the bladder.1 That sudden pressure can be caused by laughing, sneezing, or coughing.2 Urge incontinence is a sudden urge to urinate with little control over the bladder.2 This may result in the need to urinate more than seven times daily.2
Fast Facts:
- Overflow incontinence is caused by weakened bladder muscles that have nerve damage from diabetes or another disease.1
- Mixed incontinence is when two forms of incontinence occur at the same time.2
- Temporary incontinence can be caused by infection or severe constipation.1
