Research Notes on Types of Cholesterol Complexes
The different types of cholesterol complexes are low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density lipoprotein (HDL), and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL). There is only one type of cholesterol but the complexes differ in where and how it is transported.1 Cholesterol is a waxy, fat-like substance found in dairy products, eggs, and meat. It is also the leading cause of coronary heart disease.2
Fast Facts:
- LDL is classified as "bad" cholesterol and is transported to tissues. It is mainly composed of cholesterol.1
- VLDL is "very bad" cholesterol and is composed of triglycerides and cholesterol. The main function is to transport triglycerides to cells.1
- Classified as the "good" cholesterol, HDL is mainly composed of all cholesterol but picks up the leftover cholesterol from the LDL and transports it to the liver for disposal.1
