Research Notes on Diabetes (Type 2)

Diabetes mellitus type 2 is a disease in which the body does not respond to the insulin that it produces. It is characterized by high blood sugar levels. For type 2 diabetes, treatment starts with lifestyle modifications including losing weight, quitting smoking, exercising and adopting a healthy, balanced diet.1

  • Type 2 diabetes accounts for 90 to 95 percent of diagnosed diabetes.2
  • Most often appears in people older than 40.3
  • Can be present without symptoms.4
  • Common symptoms include fatigue, increased thirst, or increased appetite.3
