Research Notes on Diabetes (Type 1)

Type 1 diabetes (also known as insulin-dependent diabetes or juvenile diabetes) is a condition which affects a person's blood sugar levels. It prevents the body from absorbing glucose from the bloodstream effectively and turning it into energy. In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas stops producing insulin, a hormone which allows the body's cells to absorb glucose.1

Fast Facts:

  • Genetics and exposure to certain viruses may contribute to the onset of type 1 diabetes.2
  • There is no cure for type 1 diabetes, but it may be managed through proper treatment.2
  • Fatigue, extreme hunger, and increased thirst are a few symptoms of type 1 diabetes.3
  • In 2007, 7.8% of the US population (23 million people) developed diabetes.4
