Research Notes on Tumors

A tumor is the name for a swelling or lesion formed by an abnormal growth of cells usually called neoplasm. 1The word "tumor" actually refers to any type of lump or swelling in the body.2 Tumors are not always caused by cancer.1 A tumor can be benign, whereas cancer is considered malignant.1

  • Tumors appear to occur when there is a problem with the dividing of cells in the body.3
  • Some of the contributing factors to tumors are tobacco, obesity, inactivity (sedentary lifestyle), excessive alcohol consumption, radiation, genetic problems, excessive sunlight exposure, benzene, and a number of other chemicals and toxins.3
  • Certain viruses can play a role in the development of tumors, such as cervical cancer and hepatocellular carcinoma.3
  • Tumors can sometimes be found in one sex more than the other, and others are more common among children or the elderly.3
