Research Notes on Triglycerides
Triglycerides are the chemical form of fats which come from the food we eat and are carried into the bloodstream.1 Calories consumed through eating that are not used immediately by tissues are converted to triglycerides. They are then transported and stored in fat cells.2
Fast Facts:
- Fats contain more than twice as much energy (9 kcal/g) as carbohydrates and proteins.3
- Excess triglycerides in the plasma is called hypertriglyceridemia.4
- Research suggests that an elevated triglyceride level is a significant risk factor for the development of cardiac disease - especially when it is elevated as part of metabolic syndrome.5
