Research Notes on Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCAs)
Tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs) inhibit the reabsorption (reuptake) of the neurotransmitters serotonin and norepinephrine. Improving the balance of these neurotransmitters in the brain may help with many conditions, such as depression.
Fast Facts:
- TCAs are effective in treating around 60% of people diagnosed with depression
- TCAs treat clinical depression, neuropathic pain, nocturnal enuresis, OCD, and have also been successful in treating anxiety, insomnia, smoking cessation, bulimia nervosa, irritable bowel syndrome, narcolepsy and headaches
- Tricyclic antidepressants have been shown to be effective in treating ADHD
- Side effects include, drowsiness, dry mouth, blurred vision, constipation, urinary retention, dizziness, impaired sexual functioning, increased heart rate, disorientation or confusion, headache, low blood pressure sensitivity to sunlight, increased appetite, weight gain, nausea and weakness
- TCAs aren't considered addictive, however stopping treatment abruptly or missing several doses can cause withdrawal-like symptoms
