Research Notes on Trazodone and Pregnancy
Women who are pregnant should discuss the use of trazodone with a physician before beginning treatment. Trazodone is a category C medication according the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Drugs in this classification are generally not well studied in human pregnancy but may have shown an increased risk of fetal harm when studied in animals.1
Fast Facts:
- Some physicians may recommend a pregnant woman continue to use trazodone throughout the pregnancy only if the benefits to the mother clearly outweigh potential risks to the fetus.2
- Trazodone is excreted in high amounts in the breast milk of nursing mothers.2
- Trazodone is a generic form of the brand name medication Desyrel that is sometimes recommended in the treatment of depression.
