Research Notes on Transient Ischemic Attack
A transient ischemic attack (mini-stroke, TIA) produces symptoms similar to a stroke, but lasts only a few moments and causes no permanent damage. A TIA is sometimes considered to be a warning sign as 1 out of 3 people who suffer a TIA eventually have a stroke.1 These attacks typically last less than an hour.2
Fast Facts
- Sudden blindness in one or both eyes, dizziness, weakness, and paralysis are symptoms of a TIA.3
- A TIA is caused by a blood clot briefly blocking the flow of blood to the brain. These blood clots are commonly caused by a buildup of cholesterol containing fatty deposits known as plaques (atherosclerosis).4
- Medications like heparin and warfarin (Coumadin) are commonly used to treat a TIA. An angioplasty may also be performed.5
