Research Notes on Toxemia
Toxemia, also referred to as preeclampsia, is a medical condition resulting from a release of toxins from bacteria within your bloodstream.1 Toxemia usually affects women after 20 weeks of pregnancy. Symptoms may manifest as protein in the urine and elevated blood pressure.2
Fast Facts:
- Risk factors include first time pregnancies, older woman, being overweight, gestational diabetes, and/or a history of toxemia.3
- Depending on the severity of your toxemia, treatment may consist of medications such as antihypertensives, corticosteroids, or anticonvulsants.4
- Your health care provider may recommend bed rest if your symptoms are mild.4
