Research Notes on Total Cholesterol Levels
Total cholesterol level is measured in milligrams per deciliter of blood (mg/dL). It combines the levels for HDL (high-density lipoprotein), LDL (low-density lipoprotein), and VLDL (very low density lipoprotein).1 The desirable measurement level for total cholesterol is less than 200 mg/dL.2 A major risk factor for coronary heart disease and stroke is high blood cholesterol.3
Fast Facts:
- Ranges between 200 to 239 mg/dL are desirable and above 240 mg/dL is high risk.2
- Age, familial history, and smoking are risk factors of high cholesterol.2
- Suggestions to prevent high cholesterol are to eat a diet low in total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, and exercise.4
- A total cholesterol test may be performed to help diagnose familial dysbetalipoproteinemia and hypercholesterolemia, hypothyroidism, diabetes, and biliary cirrhosis.5
