Research Notes on Tofranil and Pregnancy
Tofranil (imipramine) is not recommended for use during pregnancy. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has labeled Tofranil as a category D medication, meaning there is a risk of birth defects. According to studies, urinary retention and withdrawal symptoms were reported in infants who were exposed to Tofranil while in-utero.1
Fast Facts:
- Possible birth defects of Tofranil when taking during the first trimester include cleft palate, diaphragmatic hernia, adrenal hypoplasia, defective abdominal muscles, exencephaly, cardiovascular, limb, and renal defects.1
- Consult with your physician before breastfeeding, as Tofranil is known to be excreted into breast milk.1
- Tofranil is a prescription medication used to treat depression and to prevent bed wetting in children.2 It is also some times used to treat attention deficit disorder (ADHD) in children, bulimia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and panic disorder.3
