Research Notes on Toe Joint Replacement

The goal of a toe joint replacement is to relieve pain in the foot caused by joint damage or arthritis. A partial toe joint replacement removes one part of the joint and replaces it with a titanium spacer, which keeps bones from rubbing against each other. A total joint replacement removes the whole joint and uses two metal pieces to replace both sides of the joint.1

Fast Facts:

  • This procedure has been used in orthopedic surgery for more than 35 years.1
  • Pain, or loss of motion in the big toe may make you a candidate for toe joint replacement.2
  • Generally, most patients can return to regular activity no later than 6 months after surgery.2
  • This surgery is 95% effective to remove pain.2
