Research Notes on Tobramycin

Tobramycin eyedrops are an aminoglycoside antibiotic used to treat eye infections.1 As an injection, it is the same class of antibiotic, but utilized to treat bacterial infections in various areas of the body, including the skin, lungs and urinary tract.2 As with other antibiotics, it is not effective on the common cold or flu.

  • Generics include Tobrex, Aktob and Nebcin.
  • Side effects include tearing, stinging, upset stomach or vomiting.3 4
  • Those with cystic fibrosis utilize the inhalation form to suppress pseudomonas aeruginosa infections.5
  • Can be extremely toxic to the kidneys.5
