Research Notes on Tics
Tics are involuntary twitches that may involve any voluntary muscle groups.1 Examples include eye blinking, facial grimacing, nasal flaring, or mouth opening.1 Tics may be motor or vocal in nature with vocal tics include humming, grunting, or saying words (typically profanity) in an explosive, spastic fashion.1
Fast Facts:
- Most tics are mild and hardly noticeable.2
- Chronic tics affect less than one percent of children and may be related to Tourette's Disorder.2
- Treatment for a tic disorder may include medication to help control the symptoms.2
