Thumb sucking may occur for various reasons in a baby or child. Babies may suck their thumb due to a natural urge to suck. This natural urge typical decreases after six months of age. After this age, babies may continue thumb sucking as a way to soothe themselves. Thumb sucking may also become a habit. Some children use this habit as a way to comfort themselves when feeling hungry, afraid, restless, quiet, sleepy, or bored.1
