Research Notes on Thumb Joint Replacement
Thumb joint replacement, also known as arthroplasty, may be a treatment option if non-invasive treatments do not ease thumb pain caused by arthritis. An artificial joint will be used to replace the damaged basal joint of the thumb. Ideally, after rehabilitation, thumb joint replacement will allow the patient to enjoy all normal activities with less pain.1
Fast Facts:
- If you suffer pain and loss of movement in your thumb due to arthritis or physical trauma, you may be a candidate for thumb joint replacement.2
- Some finger joints may also candidates for joint replacements.2
- The thumb's basal joint takes more wear and tear than most other hand joints because of the high stress on it even during normal activities.2
- Long term evaluations of this procedure have shown it to be very effective at relieving pain and restoring functionality of the thumb.2
