Research Notes on Third Trimester Care

During your third trimester of pregnancy, your prenatal visits will be scheduled more frequently. Starting at 36 weeks your doctor will want to see you once a week. During the last weeks of pregnancy, it is very important that your weight and blood pressure are monitored very closely. A sudden raise in blood pressure and rapid weight gain can be a sign of preeclampsia. Your feet and hands will be checked for swelling which is another sign of preeclampsia. A urine test will be done for protein and sugar in the urine. If you have not had the strep test done yet, it will be done at this time. If you are a carrier of group B streptococcus, you will be given intravenous antibiotics during delivery. The last procedure that your physician may perform is measuring your cervix by performing a vaginal exam. This exam is done for two major measurements: to check for dilation (how far your cervix has opened) and effacement (how much your cervix has thinned).
