Research Notes on Therapeutic Cloning
Therapeutic cloning involves producing stem cells that are a perfect genetic match for a patient through a cloning process.1 Those stem cells can be used to treat various disorders such as diabetes, Parkinson's disease, and Alzheimer's disease.2 Ideally, those stem cells could also be used to grow replacement organs for use in transplants.3 Therapeutic cloning would help to ease the lack of stem cells that are available for research.2 Therapeutic cloning has been at the center of an ethical debate for years.4
Fast Facts:
- Due to the intensity of the procedure, there are a lot of cells that are lost during the process.1
- Opponents to therapeutic cloning are concerned that it will lead to experimentation with reproductive cloning.4
- Therapeutic cloning is legal in several countries including the United Kingdom and United States.1
- Supporters of therapeutic cloning are in favor of strict regulations to supplement existing standards set by the US FDA.4
- Also known as somatic cell nuclear transfer.1
