Research Notes on Tenofovir
Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate is an antiretroviral drug that is used in the treatment of HIV.1 It works due to the body converting tenofovir into a chemical that prevents HIV from spreading into uninfected cells.2 Tenofovir can have serious side effects, including a risk of developing lactic acidosis.3
Fast Facts:
- Common side effects include upset stomach, diarrhea, vomiting, loss of appetite and gas.4
- Allergic reactions, breathing difficulties and unusual fatigue should be reported immediately.5
- Sold as Viread. When combined with emtricitabine, it is sold under the name Emtriva.
