Research Notes on Tendons

Tendons are a band of fibrous connective tissue that connects muscle to bone.1 They are capable of withstanding tension. Tendons were originally thought only to transmit forces, but new research has indicated that they act as springs as well.1 The tendon's ability to stretch allows the muscles to generate great force with little or no change in length.1

Fast Facts:

  • Also referred to as sinew.
  • Inflammation of the tendons is known as tendonitis.
  • The Achilles tendon connects the heel to the muscles of the calf.1
