Research Notes on Teen Pregnancy
Teenage pregnancy occurs when a girl between ages of 13 and 19, becomes pregnant. It has been found that 13 million children are born to girls under age 20 worldwide annually.
Fast Facts:
- 46% U.S. teens between the ages of 15 and 19 have had sex at least once.
- A sexually active teen who does not use contraceptives has a 90% chance of becoming pregnant within a year.
- Each year, almost 750,000 U.S. girls aged 15-19 become pregnant.
- This rate has declined 36% since its peak in 1990.
- Eleven percent of all U.S. births are to teens.
- Six in 10 minors who have abortions do so with at least one parent's knowledge.
- Teen pregnancies carry extra health risks to the mother and the baby.
