Research Notes on TNF Blockers
TNF blockers work by impeding the activity of tumor necrosis factor (TNF). TNF is the contributing cause of inflammation associated with autoimmune disorders.1 Enbrel, Cimzia, Humira, and Remicade are the four TNF blockers currently available in the United States.2 TNF blockers are prescribed to treat symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis, juvenile rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and ankylosing spondylitis.1
Fast Facts:
- Enbrel (etanercept) was released in 1998 as the first TNF blocker.3
- In 1999 Remicade (infliximab) was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).3
- Humira (adalimumab) received FDA approval in 2002.3
- Cimzia (certolizumab pegol), approved in 2008, is the most recent TNF blocker approved by the FDA.3
- TNF blockers are currently being studied for a possible link with lymphoma and cancers which developed during TNF blocker treatment.4
