Research Notes on Systolic Blood Pressure
Systolic blood pressure is the measure of the pressure exerted by the force of blood flowing through the arteries as the heart beats. In a blood pressure reading, the systolic pressure is the number at the top of the reading. Hypertension may be diagnosed if the systolic blood pressure reading is above 140.1
Fast Facts:
- Systolic pressure is higher than diastolic pressure because more force is necessary to carry the blood to all areas of the body.2
- Hypotension may be diagnosed if the systolic reading is below 90.2
- When a patient has a high systolic reading, but a low diastolic reading, the patient is sometimes diagnosed as having isolated systolic hypertension.2
