Lactose intolerance is the inability to metabolize lactose, a sugar found in milk and other dairy products, because the required enzyme lactase is absent or its availability is lowered. Clinical symptoms typically appear within 30 minutes but may take up to 1-2 hours depending on other foods and activities.
