Research Notes on Swollen Joints and Pain
Swollen joints and pain are commonly the result of injury or diseases of the joint.1 Diseases such as osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis, and pseudogout are also characterized by swollen joints and joint pain.2 If you are experiencing unexplained swollen, painful joints, you should contact your health care provider.
Fast Facts:
- A variety of tests will be performed by your health care provider such as x-rays and aspiration of the joint fluid to determine the cause of the swelling and pain in your joints.2
- Joint pain is sometimes referred to as arthralgia.3
- Swelling of the joint is caused by fluid building up in the soft tissue.2
