Research Notes on Swine Flu Vaccine
The U.S. government has spent $1.15 billion to buy enough vaccine to vaccinate the entire U.S. population against the swine flu. If the U.S. decides to go through with a vaccine program, it will be the largest and fastest vaccination program in world history. There are five different makers of the vaccine, Novartis, which will provide 46% of the vaccine, Sanofi Pasteur will provide 26%, CSL with 19%, 6% from MedImmune and 3% from GlaxoSmithKline. Children 0 to 4 will be on the top of the list to receive the vaccine, followed by school-aged children, children with asthma, pregnant women and critical response workers.1
Fast Facts:
- The US may have 160M doses of swine flu vaccine available sometime in October.2
- The US only makes 20 percent of the flu vaccines it uses, while Europe makes about 70 percent.3
- Mass vaccinations will not start until key information is provided from thousands of study volunteers to prove how well the vaccine works.4
