Research Notes on Swine Flu Treatment
Swine flu treatment typically involves taking antiviral drugs to reduce the symptoms. Antivirals are most effective if started within 48 hours of the onset of symptoms. These drugs may not work to relieve symptoms since the body can develop a resistance to them.1
Fast Facts:
- Swine flu is a respiratory infection caused by a specific strain of influenza A virus.2
- The H1N1 virus that causes swine flu is a derivative of the H1N1 virus that caused the 1918 flu pandemic.3
- The best prevention against spreading swine flu is frequent hand washing, avoiding ill individuals, and staying home when you are ill yourself.2
- In otherwise healthy individuals, swine flu can generally be treated like any other flu.2
