Research Notes on Swine Flu Symptoms in Children

Swine flu (H1N1) symptoms in children are very similar to any other form of flu. Common symptoms include sore throat, fever, chills, headaches, vomiting, fatigue, diarrhea, coughing, and body aches.1 Other possible symptoms include shortness of breath and a rash which may be accompanied by fever.2

Fast Facts:

  • Children under the age of five are at higher risk of developing swine flu.1
  • Children should be seen by their physician if they develop any of the above symptoms, as antiviral medications work best when administered within the first two days of developing swine flu.1
  • Serious signs associated with swine flu include fast breathing, severe vomiting, blue or gray skin, not drinking fluids, irritability, and being unable to wake the child from sleep.3
