Research Notes on Swine Flu Pandemic

U.S. officials declared a public health emergency on Sunday, April 26, 2009, due to an outbreak of swine flu (H1N1) in the United States that has already proven deadly in Mexico. The declaration of a public emergency allows local, state, and federal agencies to buy more of the known antiviral medications Tamiflu and Relenza to dispense to the public should the need arise. Travel is not being restricted, although travelers are being advised to seek prompt treatment should symptoms of the swine flu present themselves.1

Fast Facts:

  • While antiviral drugs appear to work to stop swine flu, experts caution that the drugs have a small window of efficacy and must be given within hours of the onset of symptoms.2
  • Tamiflu manufacturers have donated up to five million packets of the drug to the World Health Organization in order to help those countries who were not stockpiling the drug in the event of a pandemic of this nature.3
  • According to some reports, the U.S. has released up to 25% of the country's stockpile of Tamiflu, and the country currently has over seven million additional treatment courses.4
