Research Notes on Swine Flu Outbreak Raises Pandemic Fears


A recent outbreak of a form of what is believed to be swine flu in the United States and Mexico has officials at the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on alert for a possible pandemic. Currently, there have been seven cases of a new strain of swine flu in the United States, while Mexico reports over 940 cases of the illness, with at least 16 (and possibly more) deaths as a result. Symptoms reported by victims of the virus include: fever, coughing, and sore throat.1

  • The World Health Organization is currently calling an emergency meeting to determine whether the viral flu outbreak constitute an international health threat.2
  • Patients infected with the virus currently range in age from 9 to 54, and many report no contact with pigs.3
  • At this time, the United States is reporting cases in both Texas and California.3
