Research Notes on Swine Flu Emergency Symptoms in Adults
Adults who suspect they have the swine flu (also known as swine influenza or H1N1) should seek emergency medical care if they experience any of the following symptoms: difficulty breathing or shortness of breath, blue or purple discoloration of lips, chest pain, vomiting with an inability to keep liquids down, dizziness when standing, absence of urination, or seizures.1 If the patient is unable to be aroused, becomes less responsive than normal or seems confused, seek emergency medical care.1 Patients with a high fever or a fever that lasts more than three days should consult their doctor.2

- Normal symptoms of the swine flu include a sudden onset of headache and body aches, high fever, sore throat, runny nose, and sometimes vomiting and diarrhea.3
- You cannot be sure you have the swine flu based on symptoms, and should consult your doctor if you suspect you have the swine flu.4
- Current information on the swine flu indicates that lung cells are more susceptible to swine flu than to seasonal flu viruses.3
- Older people, pregnant women, small children, and people with asthma, diabetes, heart conditions, or other chronic medical conditions may be more likely to suffer from complications from swine flu.4
- Complications from swine flu include pneumonia, bronchitis, and sinus and ear infections.4
- Persons with chronic health problems such as heart disease, asthma, and diabetes may experience a worsening of symptoms caused by the swine flu.4 Check with your doctor to see if antiviral drugs are needed1.
